Virginia man from Rocky Mount killed following a police chase, Virginia State Police released the identity

GILES COUNTY, Virginia – The name of the man who died in a crash that ended a police chase has been made public by the Virginia State Police.

Rebel R. Hodges, who was 35 years old, died at the crash site. Police say he was thrown out of the car because he wasn’t wearing a seatbelt.

The accident happened early Saturday morning, February 11, on Route 460, half a mile west of Route 61.

Police say that Hodges was speeding west on Route 460 in a Chevrolet Prizm while the Giles County Sheriff’s Office was chasing him. He went off the right side of the road, hit a ditch, and turned over before going off the left side of the road, hitting a guardrail, and sliding down a hill. State police say that the Prizm and the cruisers that were following it did not touch during the crash.

A very hurt person who was riding in the Prizm was taken to the hospital. She was using her seatbelt.

The Giles County Sheriff’s Office says that just before the crash, one of its deputies stopped the Prizm’s driver because he or she was suspected of driving under the influence. The driver stopped at a gas station just outside of Narrows, and the deputy got out of his cruiser to walk to the Prizm. The driver then took off, and a deputy and a Pearisburg police officer joined the chase as the driver of the Prizm went through Narrows, the sheriff’s office said.

The crash, which is being looked into by state police, was too far away for the deputy or the officer to see.
