1-year-old girl died from hyperthermia after her parents who were under the influence left her inside a vehicle overnight upon returning from a party; father sentenced
Florida – In a heartbreaking case from Florida, a 34-year-old father, identified as Joel R., has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for the death of his 18-month-old daughter, who was left in a car overnight after a Fourth of July celebration. Joel pleaded guilty to aggravated manslaughter of a child, admitting his role in the tragic incident that led to his daughter’s death due to hyperthermia. The sentencing took place in a Florida court, where Judge J.Harb delivered stern remarks about the father’s neglect.
The incident unfolded when Joel and his wife, Jazmine R, returned home in the early hours after attending a party, where both had consumed alcohol and marijuana. According to court documents, the couple arrived at their home at about 3:00 a.m. on July 5, 2023, with their three children. While Jazmine took their two older children inside, Joel was supposed to bring in the toddler. However, a fatal oversight occurred.
Joel had initially opened the car door to access the child’s car seat and then went inside the house to drop off some items. When he came back out, he noticed that all the car doors were closed and, assuming his wife had taken the toddler inside, he retired to bed without verifying.
The following morning, the horrifying reality came to light. After the couple had slept for several hours, Joel, upon realizing the toddler was not in the house, discovered his daughter’s lifeless body in the car, strapped to her seat, exposed to the intense Florida sun. The outdoor heat had soared, with the heat index reaching 105 degrees, exacerbating the internal conditions of the vehicle where the toddler was confined.
Desperate attempts to revive the young girl at the hospital were futile. She was pronounced dead in the early afternoon, with her body temperature having reached a lethal 104.4 degrees Fahrenheit. The medical examination confirmed that the cause of death was hyperthermia.
This tragic event led to both parents being tested for substances, revealing that even 17 hours after the party, Joel tested positive for methamphetamine, marijuana, and alcohol, while Jazmine tested positive for marijuana and alcohol. These findings painted a grim picture of the parents’ state at the time of the incident.
The community was left reeling from the news, with Sheriff G. Judd expressing his dismay over the preventable nature of the tragedy and the excruciating suffering the child endured. The case quickly drew media attention, highlighting the severe consequences of parental negligence, especially under the influence of substances.
In court, Joel expressed remorse over the loss of his daughter, describing himself as “shattered and scarred.” However, Judge Harb pointed out the grave irresponsibility displayed, especially noting that Joel had gone back to the car to retrieve cigarettes the night of the incident but failed to notice his daughter. While Joel begins his lengthy prison sentence, Jazmine is still awaiting trial for her role in the incident. She faces a similar charge of aggravated manslaughter of a child.
This case serves as a painful reminder of the responsibilities that come with parenthood and the dire consequences that can arise from neglect, particularly under the influence of drugs and alcohol. The local community and authorities hope that this tragic story will serve as a deterrent to prevent such needless losses in the future.
