The tragic incident occurred late on the night of June 7, when Sanders, Harris, and Thomas opened fire on the vehicle that Beatrice and Janelle were in. According to reports from the sheriff’s office, the shooting resulted in the immediate death of Janelle at the scene, while her mother, Beatrice, succumbed to her injuries at a hospital shortly afterward.
In the wake of the shooting, a distressing 911 call from Beatrice captured her desperate attempts to revive her daughter, with the dispatcher recounting Beatrice’s pleas of “Where’s the baby,” and “Get up, get up.” The details of this call were later reported by local media, highlighting the brutal nature of the attack which left the car “decimated in a hail of bullets,” as described by A. Cabrera, a witness who came upon the aftermath.
Following a “months-long” investigation, Harris was arrested and Thomas was charged while already incarcerated in Georgia for unrelated crimes. Both suspects are now facing two counts of first-degree murder, with plans for their extradition to stand trial. Sanders is held at the county’s main jail. The ongoing investigation initially explored various motives, including road rage or a targeted attack, yet a clear motive has not been publicly established.
