VDOT announces overnight slow roll operations on Interstate 95 in Chesterfield County
Chesterfield, Virginia – Drivers who travel southbound Interstate 95 in Chesterfield County should prepare for overnight traffic delays next week as the Virginia Department of Transportation carries out critical bridge construction work.
VDOT announced it will implement slow rolls, also known as rolling roadblocks, on four consecutive nights from February 9 through February 12. The work will take place between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. and is needed for the raising and lowering of bridge girders over West Hundred Road.
What Drivers Can Expect During Overnight Work
The slow rolls will occur on southbound I-95 between mile marker 63 near Route 613 (Willis Road) and mile marker 60 near Route 10 (West Hundred Road). During these operations, traffic will be intentionally slowed across all lanes to speeds of about 5 to 10 miles per hour.
A slow roll is a traffic control method that creates a temporary gap in traffic by gradually reducing vehicle speeds. This gap allows construction crews to safely perform overhead work without live traffic passing underneath.
Each slow roll is expected to last about 15 minutes, followed by approximately 45 minutes of normal traffic flow before the next operation begins. While traffic will continue moving, drivers should expect periodic delays throughout the overnight hours.
VDOT confirmed that Virginia State Police will be present to assist with traffic control and ensure the operation is carried out safely.
Safety Measures and Public Information
To help alert motorists, advance warning signs will be posted before drivers reach the work zone. VDOT urges travelers to stay alert, reduce speed, and follow directions from law enforcement while traveling through the area.
The agency noted that overnight hours were chosen to limit the impact on daytime traffic, but emphasized that safety remains the top priority during this phase of construction.
Anyone with questions about the project or the planned slow rolls can contact VDOT’s Customer Service Center at 800-FOR-ROAD (800-367-7623).
Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and stay informed as this work continues over the four-night period.
