McLean man charged after threatening federal employee and lying to law enforcement
McLean, Virginia – A McLean resident is facing federal charges after allegedly sending a threatening message to a federal employee and later attempting to mislead law enforcement officers during the investigation.
Alleged Death Threat Sent Using Google Voice
According to court documents, 33-year-old Scott Allen Bolger was charged by criminal complaint with transmitting threats in interstate commerce and making false statements following a disturbing incident on December 23. Bolger allegedly used Google Voice, a service that allows users to send text messages using alternate phone numbers, to send a chilling message to a federal employee in which he threatened to kill the employee.
“Threats of violence are serious crimes with serious consequences,” said Lindsey Halligan, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia. “Those who target federal employees should know that we will investigate and prosecute these offenses to the fullest extent of the law.”
When members of a federal task force arrived at Bolger’s residence to question him regarding the threatening message, they clearly identified themselves as federal law enforcement officers. However, Bolger allegedly tried to mislead the agents by falsely identifying himself as Brian Black and claiming that he did not know anyone named Scott Bolger.
Potential Prison Time and Ongoing Prosecution
If convicted, Bolger faces up to five years in prison. His sentence will ultimately be decided by a federal district court judge, who will weigh the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors before making a final determination.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Gavin R. Tisdale.
