Online Powerball purchase leads to one million dollar prize for Virginia player
Spotsylvania, Virginia – Although Virginia didn’t sell the jackpot-winning ticket in the Powerball drawing on December 24, the Commonwealth came away with a major win for public education. Over the course of the 46 consecutive Powerball drawings leading up to the Christmas Eve event, Powerball ticket sales in Virginia generated an estimated $33.5 million in profit. As mandated by law, this entire amount will be directed to support K-12 public education across the state.
The drawing itself proved especially lucky for Virginia players. More than 166,000 tickets sold in the state won prizes in Wednesday’s Powerball draw. Among them, one player struck it big with a $1 million prize. This winning ticket wasn’t purchased at a physical store but was instead bought online using the Virginia Lottery’s mobile app.
In addition to the million-dollar win, one ticket worth $100,000 was sold at the Wawa located at 9235 Courthouse Road in Spotsylvania. Furthermore, two tickets each winning $50,000 were sold at different locations: one at 7-Eleven at 2105 Salem Road in Virginia Beach, and the other at Chill Stop, located at 3200 Western Branch Boulevard in Chesapeake.
Winning Numbers and Jackpot Update
The winning numbers drawn on December 24 were 4, 25, 31, 52, 59, with the Powerball number 19. While Virginia had multiple high-tier winners, the lone jackpot-winning ticket—worth a staggering $1.817 billion—was sold in Arkansas. It marked the end of an extended Powerball run that generated nationwide buzz and a significant surge in ticket sales.
The Powerball jackpot now resets to $20 million for the next drawing scheduled on Saturday. Despite the smaller pot, the enthusiasm surrounding the game remains high, especially given the recent wins across Virginia.
Impact Beyond the Game
This lottery run served as more than just a game of chance. The profits made during this period underscore the broader mission of the Virginia Lottery—supporting the education of future generations. Every ticket purchased contributed directly to educational initiatives, making every non-jackpot win still a community triumph.
As excitement continues to build with each drawing, and players across the Commonwealth test their luck, the real winners are the students and schools who benefit from the revenue generated.
With new drawings just around the corner, Virginians are already hoping that the next winning ticket—and maybe even the next jackpot—will land right in their own hometown.
