Crow’s Nest Natural Area Preserve continues to grow with new trail extension for the public
Stafford, Virginia – Nature enthusiasts have a new reason to explore Crow’s Nest Natural Area Preserve in Stafford County. A 1.2-mile extension to the Boykin’s Landing Trail is now open, allowing hikers to journey further along the scenic shoreline of Potomac Creek before climbing a ridge that connects to the Crow’s Nest Point Trail. With this addition, the trail stretches to 4.4 miles from the Raven Road access parking lot, offering a longer and more rewarding outdoor experience.
Crow’s Nest is one of northern Virginia’s most treasured natural escapes, protecting mature hardwood forests in an area experiencing rapid development. The preserve, dedicated in 2008 as the state’s 54th natural area preserve, is managed by the Virginia Natural Heritage Program at the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR). It provides public opportunities for hiking, paddling, and other low-impact recreation.
The new extension was built by DCR staff with support from the Virginia Outdoors Foundation team from Bull Run Mountains Natural Area Preserve.
“We’re proud to celebrate this new extension to the Boykin’s Landing Trail, and we’re already looking ahead to 2026 when a larger trail expansion and new public parking access will become a reality through our continued partnership with Stafford County,” said Lesley Starke, Virginia Natural Heritage Program chief of natural areas stewardship.
Balancing Access and Preservation
Crow’s Nest is one of 21 natural area preserves in Virginia that provide public access while prioritizing the protection of sensitive ecosystems. The preserve currently maintains two small parking lots, available on a first-come, first-served basis, to limit overcrowding. Officials note this is essential to preserve both the quiet, relaxing visitor experience and the fragile natural resources the site safeguards.
Visitors are encouraged to check the preserve’s official web page at www.dcr.virginia.gov/crowsnest before planning their trip for updates on access and conditions.
With this latest expansion, Crow’s Nest continues to balance its mission of protecting vital habitats with offering Virginians and visitors alike a chance to connect with nature in one of the Commonwealth’s most scenic landscapes.
