Lane closures and traffic delays expected on U.S. 29/250 Bypass for bridge work in Albemarle County
Culpeper, Virginia – Drivers traveling through Albemarle County should prepare for overnight delays as the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) continues critical work on the replacement of the Route 601 (Old Ivy Road) bridge. Scheduled work on this important infrastructure project will require temporary lane closures and full stoppages of traffic beginning the evening of Tuesday, May 6, and lasting into the early morning hours of Wednesday, May 7.
The planned closures will take place from 9 p.m. Tuesday to 6 a.m. Wednesday, during which the left inside lanes of the U.S. 29/250 Bypass will be shut down in both directions. This will occur between Route 654 (Barracks Road) and U.S. 29 Business (Fontaine Avenue) to allow crews to safely continue work on the bridge replacement.
In addition to the lane closures, drivers should expect temporary traffic stoppages closer to midnight. At that time, traffic will come to a complete halt in both directions for approximately 15 minutes at a time to allow for the removal of a bridge beam from the Route 601 bridge, which spans across the bypass. These stoppages are necessary to ensure the safety of both workers and motorists.
Flagging teams will also control eastbound Route 601 traffic while the beams are carefully removed from the structure. Travelers are urged to plan for delays, remain alert, reduce speed, and obey all posted signage and flagger instructions when approaching and passing through the work zone.
The Old Ivy Road bridge, originally constructed in 1961, has been targeted for replacement due to structural deficiencies. The project, which began on February 3, is scheduled to be completed by July 2026, providing the community with a safer and more reliable bridge once finished.
