Talented young scientists from Roanoke County Public Schools set to represent their schools at regional competition
Salem, Virginia – Roanoke County Public Schools recently celebrated the outstanding achievements of young scientific minds at the 2025 Roanoke County Science Fair. The event, held on February 22 at Northside High School, brought together middle and high school students from across the county and the Roanoke Valley Governor’s School. Participants showcased their cutting-edge research in fields such as environmental science, biomedical studies, and engineering, highlighting their dedication to scientific exploration.
Students Prepare for Regional Competition
The top three winners in each category have earned the opportunity to advance to the Western Virginia Regional Science Fair, set to take place on March 8, 2025, at Virginia Western Community College. These students will compete against some of the most talented young researchers in the region, representing Roanoke County with their exceptional projects.
“We are incredibly proud of all our students who participated in this year’s Science Fair,” said Dr. Ken Nicely, Superintendent of Roanoke County Public Schools. “Their hard work, curiosity, and dedication to scientific inquiry are truly inspiring. I also want to extend my gratitude to the dedicated science teachers who guided and supported these students throughout their research. Their encouragement and mentorship play a crucial role in fostering opportunities for our students to demonstrate their learning.”
Judges Recognize Outstanding Projects
A distinguished panel of judges, including professionals from Virginia Tech, Roanoke College, and local STEM industries, evaluated student projects based on their creativity, application of the scientific method, and overall presentation. The event would not have been possible without the dedication of educators, volunteers, and community supporters who continuously foster a love for science and innovation among students.
Each year, the Roanoke County Science Department awards the prestigious Roanoke County Science Fair Trophy to one middle school and one high school, based on the overall performance of their students.
