DCR accepting applications for Meaningful Watershed Educational Experience grants

Virginia – The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) has announced that applications are now being accepted for the Meaningful Watershed Educational Experience (MWEE) grants. Interested applicants can apply until March 5, 2025, with a total of $250,000 in funding anticipated for the upcoming grant cycle.

Encouraging Environmental Awareness Through Education

The MWEE grant program is designed to provide K-12 students with opportunities to develop a deeper understanding of Virginia’s Chesapeake Bay watershed. These projects encourage critical thinking and environmental literacy through hands-on experiences such as field investigations and action-oriented projects that address local environmental challenges. All projects are aligned with grade-level educational standards to ensure meaningful learning.

The annual grant program is managed by DCR’s Office of Environmental Education. In 2024, the program awarded $382,421 to 14 recipients, benefiting over 15,400 students and 425 educators, demonstrating its impact on environmental education across the state.

Funding Details and Eligibility

The MWEE grant program provides flexibility in funding requests, with no minimum amount required. However, applicants can request up to $45,000 to support their proposed initiatives for the 2025-26 school year.

Eligible applicants include:

  • School divisions
  • Non-profit organizations
  • Higher education institutions
