Texas – In a heartbreaking incident in Texas, an 11-month-old boy, identified as K. Lang, was fatally shot by his older toddler brother in the parking lot of a veteran’s medical center. This devastating event unfolded earlier this week as the children, along with an adult, waited in a parked vehicle for a medical appointment.
The shooting occurred when one of the toddlers in the vehicle grabbed a loaded long gun stored in the back of the vehicle. The child pulled the trigger, discharging a single round that unfortunately struck Lang in the head. At the time of the incident, a woman and three children—including a three-year-old, a two-year-old, and the 11-month-old baby—were inside the vehicle. Authorities have not disclosed how the woman is related to the children or who owns the firearm.
Lang, who was on the verge of celebrating his first birthday in November, was the youngest of six siblings. The family had recently relocated, seeking a fresh start and new opportunities. An online fundraiser set up by Lang’s aunt describes him as a beacon of joy and a budding toddler just learning to walk. “He brought immense joy to our lives and was in the process of learning to walk. The medical examiner’s office confirmed the identity of the victim. The investigation into the incident is still ongoing, and police are currently looking into the possibility of pressing criminal charges related to the incident.Police Chief W. McManus described the event as a “terrible, terrible tragedy,” highlighting the preventability of such incidents through proper firearm safety and storage. Police Sgt. W. Moscoso emphasized the importance of securing firearms, especially in vehicles, recommending the use of lock boxes or portable safes. “This tragedy and any tragedy like this are 100% preventable,” Moscoso stated, noting that free gun locks and boxes are available at SAFFE offices throughout the city.
The medical center where the incident occurred expressed deep sorrow over the tragic event and extended their condolences to the affected family and friends. They reaffirmed their commitment to the safety of their veterans and staff and commended the quick response of local law enforcement and their VA Police.
