New Kent County motorists should expect delays as new traffic signals are set to go live next week for I-64 bridge project
Providence Forge, Virginia – Beginning next week, drivers traveling through the intersection of Route 106 (Emmaus Church Road) and Interstate 64 in New Kent County will encounter two new temporary traffic signals. These signals mark the start of a significant phase in the Virginia Department of Transportation’s (VDOT) I-64 Gap Segment A Widening project.
As part of this long-term improvement plan, VDOT’s design-build contractor, Shirley Contracting Company (SCC), will begin replacing the bridge superstructure on Emmaus Church Road, which passes over I-64. To safely carry out this multi-phased construction project, two temporary traffic signals have been installed at the I-64 and Emmaus Church Road intersections—both eastbound and westbound.
These newly coordinated signals will manage “continuous bidirectional single-lane traffic across the bridge”, ensuring that vehicles can still move through the area while work is underway. The new traffic pattern will be in place 24 hours a day, seven days a week for the duration of the construction.
The bridge replacement and widening project is expected to last until the spring of 2027, making it crucial for drivers to remain alert and plan for possible delays in this area. Motorists are advised to allow extra time when approaching the work zone, especially during peak travel hours.
