Virginia man faces charges for embezzling over $200,000 from employer
Charlottesville, Virginia – A federal grand jury in Charlottesville has charged Vernon Fisher, a 66-year-old man from Shenandoah, Virginia, with multiple counts of wire fraud. The indictment accuses Fisher of orchestrating a sophisticated scheme to divert over $200,000 from his former employer for personal use.
According to the indictment, the fraudulent activities spanned from 2017 to 2021, during which time Fisher was employed by a plastics company based in Elkton, Virginia. He held the positions of accountant and controller at Victim Company, where his duties included managing significant financial operations such as filing taxes, running payroll, handling bank deposits, and paying the company’s bills.
The court documents reveal that Fisher allegedly linked his personal bank accounts to those of Victim Company. Over the course of several years, he executed more than 300 financial transactions, siphoning company funds exceeding $200,000 into his own accounts. The stolen funds were reportedly spent on personal expenses at various high-end retailers, including Neiman Marcus, Kay Jewelers, Macy’s, and Nordstrom.
Further complicating his fraudulent activities, Fisher is also accused of connecting his PayPal and Cash App accounts to the company’s financial accounts, enabling him to transfer money directly into these personal payment platforms.
The indictment brings serious charges against Fisher, with each count of wire fraud carrying a potential maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison if he is convicted. This case underscores the severe penalties associated with financial crimes and the thoroughness with which they are prosecuted.
U.S. Attorney Christopher R. Kavanaugh and Stanley M. Meador, the Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Richmond Division, announced the charges. The FBI continues to investigate the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Sally J. Sullivan is leading the prosecution.
