Liebherr Mining Equipment to create 175 jobs with new $72.3 million investment in Virginia
Virginia – Governor Glenn Youngkin has announced earlier this week that Liebherr Mining Equipment, a global leader in the production of industrial mining equipment, will be expanding its operations with a $72.3 million investment in the City of Newport News and the City of Hampton. This expansion is set to enhance manufacturing capabilities and create 175 new jobs, bolstering the local economy and workforce.
Liebherr Mining Equipment has chosen Virginia for its strategic location, leveraging the state as its global production headquarters for mining trucks. This expansion is not just a boost for the company but also a significant development for the local communities involved. Governor Youngkin expressed his gratitude and enthusiasm for this partnership, stating, “We thank Liebherr, an international leader in mining equipment manufacturing, for its commitment to the Commonwealth of Virginia. Liebherr has recognized that Virginia is strategically located to serve as its global production headquarters for mining trucks and service customers within the United States and across the world. We celebrate the community partnership between Liebherr, the City of Newport News, and the City of Hampton that made this expansion possible.”
Secretary of Commerce and Trade, Caren Merrick, also highlighted the importance of such investments, pointing out the advantages that have drawn Liebherr to the region: “Companies like Liebherr recognize the superior talent pool, workforce training opportunities, and strong business climate here in Virginia, and I am proud about the additional jobs and investment the company is bringing to Hampton Roads.”
The local leaders of Newport News and Hampton have welcomed Liebherr’s decision with open arms. Newport News Mayor Phillip Jones praised the company’s innovative spirit and the joint efforts of the two cities that facilitated this expansion. “The company’s spirit of innovation, its $72 million investment in advanced technologies, and the collaborative partnership of the two cities to assist Liebherr in increasing its capacity will positively impact our region’s workforce and economy for years to come,” said Mayor Jones.
Hampton Mayor Donnie Tuck echoed these sentiments, celebrating over fifty years of partnership with Liebherr and the promising future this expansion signifies. “We are excited that Liebherr has made the strategic decision to invest more than $72 million and create 175 new jobs to manufacture its next generation mining equipment in our cities. We look forward to Liebherr’s continued strong presence in our communities and the Hampton Roads region for many years,” Mayor Tuck remarked.
The Virginia Economic Development Partnership played a crucial role in securing this project for Virginia, with Governor Youngkin approving a $1.5 million grant from the Commonwealth’s Opportunity Fund to assist both Newport News and Hampton. Furthermore, Liebherr will benefit from The Port of Virginia Economic and Infrastructure Development Zone Grant Program and receive support for employee training through the Virginia Jobs Investment Program.
Stephen A. Edwards, CEO and executive director of the Virginia Port Authority, emphasized the strategic importance of Virginia’s business-friendly climate and its long-standing productive relationship with Liebherr. “This announcement is a testament to Virginia’s positive business climate because an international brand like Liebherr Mining Equipment has opportunities all over the world. The Port of Virginia and Liebherr have built a productive relationship over the years and we look forward to continuing to serve as the company’s logistics provider.”
