Roanoke residents invited to assist in summer mural project

Roanoke, Virginia – Roanoke is set to welcome an artistic addition this summer with a fresh mural destined for the River’s Edge North Park.

The location, a wall on South Jefferson Street at the periphery of the park near Carilion Clinic, has been marred by graffiti and left bare for a considerable period. Now, it is poised to undergo a transformation.

In an engaging community initiative, Roanoke residents are invited to contribute to this creative endeavor, assisting artist Jon Murrill in bringing the mural to life. The initiative serves not only to beautify the area but also to foster community spirit and unity.

Douglas Jackson, Roanoke’s arts and culture coordinator, offered insight into the power of collective artistry, stating, “If we get together, roll up our sleeves up over a can of paint or get our hands into paper mache and we start talking to somebody, we might find new common ground, because a different part of our brain is being activated.” His sentiment encapsulates the belief that shared artistic endeavors can spark dialogue, forge bonds, and contribute to a sense of tranquility within the community.

The project is due to commence in August. In preparation, sign-up links for those interested in participating in the painting process will be distributed in July, thus providing ample opportunity for community members to partake in this meaningful and beautifying endeavor.
