Local Colors Festival returns to Elmwood Park on Saturday
Roanoke, Virginia – The Local Colors Festival, now in its 32nd year, will once again enrich Roanoke’s Elmwood Park with a vibrant display of global cultures this Saturday, May 20th. The largest free multicultural event in the city, it promises a bounty of experiences and flavors.
The opening ceremony will launch a day teeming with engaging activities, including the admired Parade of Nations and a myriad of performances. Attendees can explore the world through dozens of stalls that showcase unique cultural artifacts, international cuisine, educational exhibits, and crafts, all represented by community partners.
Designed with all ages in mind, the festival has ensured a dedicated space for the younger attendees. Here, children can immerse themselves in multicultural learning through interactive activities and even indulge in some face painting.
Adults aren’t left out from the fun, as an international beer truck will offer an opportunity to savor a range of global brews. Meanwhile, a range of performances will light up the stage, featuring artists like Southwest Virginia Ballet, World of Dance, Community Arts Reach, and Dream Dance Fitness.
As Lisa Spencer, the Executive Director of Local Colors, eloquently puts it, acknowledging the diversity within our communities is vital. “The richness of Southwest Virginia comes from its myriad cultures. When we honor their heritage, we tell them they are seen, they are appreciated,” Spencer says.
An enticing range of culinary delights will be on offer, ensuring that attendees won’t go hungry. Participating vendors include Kona KoffeeHouse, Sudah’s Kitchen, Lynchburg’s Caribbean Jerk Pot, and Empanada Nirvana Roanoke, amongst others, all set to serve delicious international dishes.
The festival is set to run from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., offering a day of immersive, enriching experiences to all attendees.
