Second escaped inmate arrested at Longwood University’s campus apartment property
Farmville, Virginia – On Monday morning, the second individual who managed to escape from Piedmont Regional Jail last weekend was apprehended at one of Longwood University’s campus apartment properties. Bruce Callahan, a 44-year-old man, was discovered by the Prince Edward County Sheriff’s Office, which refrained from divulging further information on the matter.
Longwood University reported that campus police located Callahan around 5:30 a.m. at Lancer Park, a mere three miles from the jail he had escaped from just a week prior. The exact Lancer Park complex where he was discovered remains unspecified. In a bid to receive medical assistance, Callahan had activated an outdoor fire alarm at the student apartments. According to Longwood University, he was found in a state of injury and poor health.
The other escapee, 26-year-old Alder Marin-Sotelo, was apprehended by Mexican authorities last week, as confirmed by the FBI. While Callahan faced drug charges, Marin-Sotelo was being held on a gun-related charge. Marin-Sotelo had also been charged in the 2022 murder of a North Carolina sheriff’s deputy, but was not detained in relation to that case. The FBI and U.S. Marshals had offered a $70,000 reward for information leading to his whereabouts.
As per reports, the Piedmont Regional Jail Authority Board was made aware five months ago of the need to replace certain locks at the facility. The jail’s superintendent confirmed that the two escapees had tampered with the locking mechanism on the rear door of the jail.
In a subsequent statement, the Piedmont Regional Jail clarified that while the issue of door lock replacement had indeed been discussed in previous meetings, these talks pertained to interior doors located in a different housing pod from where the inmates had escaped. The replacement of these interior locks is part of the jail’s capital improvement plan.
