City of Roanoke opens nominations for 2024 Citizen of the Year Award

Roanoke, Virginia – The City of Roanoke has begun accepting nominations for its prestigious Citizen of the Year Award, an annual honor celebrating individuals who go above and beyond in their dedication to the community. This award seeks to recognize residents who exemplify selflessness, generosity, and sustained community involvement, encouraging Roanoke residents to nominate outstanding individuals who make a meaningful impact.

Award Criteria and Nomination Process

To be considered, nominees must meet specific eligibility requirements designed to spotlight those who consistently go the extra mile for the city’s benefit. According to the nomination criteria, eligible candidates must:

1. Showcase Significant Dedication – Nominees should have shown exceptional volunteerism or philanthropy within the Roanoke community.
2. Demonstrate Longevity of Service – A minimum of three years of voluntary community service is required.
3. Exceed Professional Expectations – For nominees whose contributions are related to their professional roles, they should demonstrate a level of service that significantly exceeds job expectations.
4. Agree to Publicity and Background Requirements – Nominees must consent to having their names and volunteer contributions publicized and agree to a background check.

Exclusions include previous award winners, current elected officials, and anyone running for public office in 2024. Additional materials, such as résumés, endorsement letters, and other supporting documents, can accompany the nomination for stronger consideration.

How to Submit a Nomination

Roanoke residents can submit nominations in person, by mail, or e-mail:

• Online – Access the nomination form at Roanoke Citizen of the Year.
• In Person – Visit the City Clerk’s Office, located at Room 456, Noel C. Taylor Municipal Building, 215 Church Avenue, S.W., from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday.
• By Mail or Email – Send completed nominations to Cecelia F. McCoy, CMC, City Clerk, 215 Church Avenue, S.W., Room 456, Roanoke, Virginia 24011. Alternatively, email nominations to [email protected].
