The attack was particularly vicious and premeditated. The trio, along with a previously convicted defendant, approached the couple at around 2 a.m. as they were parked in the apartment complex parking lot. Brandishing firearms, they assaulted the woman and threatened to “blow her brains out” if she resisted. They also held her boyfriend at gunpoint and forced him to watch the “act.” The ordeal did not end with the assault; the perpetrators also robbed the couple, taking items from their cars before fleeing on foot, leaving the victims to escape in opposite directions.
The trauma inflicted upon the victims was severe, with District Attorney P. Gatson stating, “This is a despicable crime that absolutely could not go unchecked. The trauma these defendants inflicted on the victims is unimaginable and these three men deserve to be punished to the fullest extent of the law.”
Following the attack, both victims managed to call 911 and report the horrific incident. The police investigation quickly gathered momentum as several other cars in the area were found to have been broken into and robbed. Notably, a handgun was reported stolen from one of the vehicles.
The breakthrough came from several pieces of crucial evidence. Descriptions from the victims, particularly noting the stark height difference between Curney and Livingston and specific details like Livingston’s red jogging pants, helped identify the suspects. Surveillance from a Ring doorbell camera captured footage of the group prior to the attack. Additionally, DNA evidence from a ra-e kit matched to Curney and fingerprints inside the victims’ vehicles were matched to Harris.
The case saw significant developments when Curney was stopped as a passenger in a vehicle about a month after the attack. The stolen gun was recovered during this stop. Upon questioning, Curney not only matched the video surveillance from the night of the crime but also admitted his involvement and partially identified his co-defendants. Further scrutiny of his phone revealed frequent contacts and social media interactions with Harris, solidifying his connection to the crime.
Livingston, Curney, and Harris were found guilty of ra-e, aggravated sodomy, and armed robbery. Curney received an additional conviction for possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. The trial, which unfolded over several days, concluded with the jury delivering guilty verdicts, paving the way for a future sentencing hearing scheduled for October 28.
As the community reflects on the severity of this case, the upcoming sentencing will likely serve as a crucial moment for delivering justice, not only to penalize the perpetrators but also to provide some measure of closure to the victims of this dreadful crime. The district attorney’s office and local law enforcement have been commended for their diligent work in bringing these offenders to justice, highlighting the community’s resolve against such violent and heinous acts.
