Roanoke County motorists advised of temporary lane closure and possible delays on Route 419
Roanoke, Virginia – Drivers traveling through Roanoke County should prepare for traffic changes and potential delays as construction work continues along Route 419, also known as Electric Road. A temporary lane closure is scheduled to begin Friday, Feb. 27, at 7 p.m., weather permitting, and is expected to remain in place for approximately five days.
Transportation officials say the right eastbound lane of Electric Road will be closed between Ogden Road and the southbound Route 220 on-ramp. During this period, drivers must use the left and center lanes while traveling through the construction zone.
Traffic Changes and Access Details
While the Route 220 southbound on-ramp will remain open, motorists will only be able to access the ramp from the center lane. Officials emphasized that all business entrances within the construction area will remain accessible, helping to reduce disruption for customers and employees.
The traffic shift is expected to remain in effect until Tuesday, March 3, at 7 p.m. Drivers may experience delays and are encouraged to allow extra travel time or consider alternate routes.
Electronic message boards and roadway signage will be in place to notify drivers of the lane closure and traffic pattern changes. Officials noted that message boards will be updated to reflect the most current schedule and traffic conditions.
Part of Major Interchange Improvement Project
The lane closure is necessary to allow crews to install storm drainage infrastructure as part of the Route 419 and Route 220 Diverging Diamond Interchange project in Roanoke and Roanoke County. Construction on the large-scale interchange improvement began in spring 2025 and is expected to be completed in fall 2028.
The diverging diamond interchange design is intended to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, and enhance safety for motorists traveling through the busy corridor.
Motorists are urged to remain alert in the work zone, follow posted signs, and exercise caution while traveling through the area. By planning ahead and allowing extra time, drivers can help ensure safer travel while crews complete essential infrastructure improvements.
