Roanoke County Backpack Run returns for 13th year with tribute to Marion Childress
Roanoke, Virginia – The annual Backpack Run is returning to Roanoke County for its 13th year, bringing together runners, families, and community supporters to raise funds for local students and teachers. Presented by the Roanoke County Public Schools Education Foundation, this year’s event introduces a meaningful tribute by renaming the 5K race in honor of a longtime running advocate.
The 5K event will now be known as the Marion Childress 5K, recognizing Marion Childress, founder of the C&C Running Team and a well-known ambassador for running in the Roanoke Valley.
“Marion has been an instrumental partner and helped us start the Backpack Run back in 2013,” said Chuck Lionberger, race director for the Backpack Run. “Over the years, he has supported this race and promoted running in the Roanoke Valley. We are proud to host a race in his name,” Lionberger said.
Race details and participation options
The Backpack Run will offer both in-person and virtual participation for the Marion Childress 5K and the Backpack Run 10K. The in-person races are scheduled for March 21 at Green Hill Park, with the event beginning at 9 a.m.
Participants can also take part in the Backpack Challenge by completing both the 5K and 10K events. Those who complete the challenge will receive individual finisher medals as well as a third exclusive custom Backpack Challenge medal or item. Challenge participants may complete both races in person or virtually.
Registration fees vary based on age and team participation. The 5K registration ranges from $20 to $35, while the 10K costs between $35 and $55. The Backpack Challenge, which includes both races, ranges from $50 to $75. Registration is available online at www.rcps.us/backpackrun.
Supporting education in Roanoke County
Proceeds from the event will support the Roanoke County Public Schools Education Foundation, a nonprofit organization that has provided more than $1.6 million in support since 1991. Funding from the foundation has helped provide teacher grants and student scholarships throughout Roanoke County.
Organizers say the event not only promotes health and fitness but also strengthens community connections while supporting educational opportunities for local students. With options for runners of all levels and a cause that directly benefits schools, the Backpack Run continues to be a cherished community tradition.
