Warnings and advisories issued as snow and strong winds expected to impact travel across the region
Blacksburg, Virginia – Residents across parts of Virginia and West Virginia are being urged to prepare for hazardous weather as a Winter Storm Warning and multiple Winter Weather Advisories remain in effect. The warnings, issued ahead of anticipated snowfall and wind gusts, are expected to bring difficult travel conditions and potential power disruptions.
According to the alert, “Winter Storm Warning in effect for Western Greenbrier with 4-10″ of additional snow possible.” This region is forecast to receive the heaviest snowfall totals, making road travel particularly dangerous.
In addition to Greenbrier, “Winter Weather Advisories [are] issued west of the Blue Ridge and in parts of the New River Valley.” These areas can expect snowfall accumulations ranging between 1 and 6 inches, with higher totals in elevated terrain.
Officials warn of “slick conditions, especially on untreated roads and overpasses,” and urge drivers to use extreme caution.
Beyond the snowfall, the storm system is also expected to bring powerful wind gusts. Some areas may experience gusts as high as 60 mph, potentially leading to downed branches and localized power outages.
Weather officials are asking residents to stay informed as the storm progresses. “Stay weather aware today into tomorrow for precipitation again as well as wind gusts anticipated to reach up to 60mph in some areas,” the alert reads.
Crews are on standby to respond to any emergencies and maintain road safety during the storm. Residents are encouraged to watch their local forecast, avoid unnecessary travel, and prepare for rapidly changing conditions as the system moves through.
