Burke man claims million dollar prize after New Year’s Millionaire Raffle surprises five lucky winners
Burke, Virginia – A retired U.S. Army officer received a life-changing surprise on New Year’s Day after discovering he was one of the top prize winners in the Virginia New Year’s Millionaire Raffle, claiming a staggering $1 million prize.
“I was kind of shocked! It just feels amazing!” the winner told Virginia Lottery officials after checking the results and learning his ticket had matched the winning numbers. The lucky draw took place on January 1, marking an unforgettable start to the new year for the retired veteran.
Though the winner’s name will remain a mystery—Virginia law allows winners of prizes worth $1 million or more to claim anonymously—what is known is where the winning moment began. The man purchased his lucky ticket, #038045, at the Giant Food store located at 6011 Burke Center Parkway in Burke. That same ticket turned out to be one of five drawn for the top $1 million prize.
Multiple Winners Across the State
The other four $1 million tickets were bought in Alexandria, Bealeton, Hopewell, and Madison, spreading excitement across several regions of the Commonwealth. In addition to the top winners, seven tickets won $100,000 each, sold in Hampton, Leesburg, Manassas, Montvale, Richmond, Stafford, and Winchester.
Furthermore, the raffle produced 1,000 additional winners, each earning $500, adding to the wide celebration of Virginia Lottery’s annual event.
There was another fortunate recipient in the form of a business bonus—retailers who sell $1 million winning tickets receive a $10,000 reward from the Virginia Lottery. In this case, the Giant Food store in Burke earned that bonus for facilitating the prize-winning moment.
With over 1,000 winners and millions in total prizes, the Virginia New Year’s Millionaire Raffle continues to bring surprise and joy to players across the state—proving once again that a simple ticket bought at the grocery store could lead to a million-dollar moment.
