Winter storm forces closures and postponements across Roanoke

Roanoke, Virginia – In response to the winter storm impacting the Roanoke region, several city programs, community events, and recreational activities have been cancelled or rescheduled. The City of Roanoke released a list of official closures and updates, emphasizing public safety and encouraging residents to stay informed through social media and emergency alert systems.

Roanoke residents are urged to follow official updates regarding winter weather, trash collection, and road conditions by visiting Roanokeva.gov or following the City of Roanoke on Facebook and Instagram. To receive timely alerts, citizens can sign up for Star City Alert emergency messages by texting STARCITY to 67283 or subscribe to MyRoanoke email updates by clicking the “Stay Connected” button on the city’s website.

Recreational and Library Program Closures

The City of Roanoke Parks and Recreation Department has canceled all athletic and recreation programs originally scheduled for Saturday, January 24, and Sunday, January 25. The Discovery Center will also remain closed on both days. Additionally, the much-anticipated Skatepark Ribbon Cutting planned for Friday, January 30 has been postponed, with a new date yet to be determined.

While Roanoke Public Libraries remain open, all library programs have been cancelled during the storm period to ensure public safety.

Rescheduled Public Planning Meetings

Several Council Member Initiative (CMI) Community Meetings, originally set for January 24, 26, and 27, have been rescheduled due to weather concerns. The new dates are as follows:

  • Gainsboro Library CMI Meeting – January 31, 11:00 AM – 12:30 PM

  • Melrose Library CMI Meeting – February 2, 5:30 PM – 7:00 PM

  • Main Library CMI Meeting – February 3, 5:30 PM – 7:00 PM

The Main Street Community Event, which was to be held in person, has been postponed to February 21. However, a virtual Zoom drop-in call with Main Street America will still take place on January 24 from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM. Residents can join via this Zoom link, using Meeting ID: 870 2750 3697 and Passcode: 282406.
