Roanoke County to observe MLK National Day of Service with closures and service changes

Roanoke, Virginia – Roanoke County has announced that its administrative offices will be closed on Monday, January 19, 2026, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. National Day of Service.

Trash Pickup and Transportation Services Affected

Roanoke County officials have confirmed that trash collection will be delayed by one day throughout the entire week for all routes. Residents are advised to place their containers out a day later than usual to ensure service.

Public transit services through CORTRAN will also be suspended on Monday, with no transportation options available for the day.

Library and Court Closures

Roanoke County Public Libraries will be closed for the entire day on January 19, giving staff and the public the opportunity to observe the holiday. Likewise, the Roanoke County Clerk of Circuit Court’s office will be closed, resuming regular operations the following day.

Recreation Centers Adjust Schedules

The Parks, Recreation and Tourism administrative offices and the Brambleton Recreation Center will also close for the day. However, Green Ridge Recreation Center will remain open with normal hours, operating from 5:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. This allows residents an option for indoor activity and wellness despite the holiday.

Roanoke County urges residents to plan ahead for these changes and take part in community service opportunities as part of the national effort to honor Dr. King’s legacy.

For more updates and scheduling notices, residents can check Roanoke County’s official website or follow local government channels.
