VDOT to close LaSalle Avenue on-ramp to I-64 east for necessary roadway maintenance
Hampton, Virginia – Drivers in Hampton should plan ahead for a short-term closure of the northbound LaSalle Avenue on-ramp to I-64 east, which is scheduled for Friday, December 19. According to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), the ramp will be closed for approximately two hours starting at 10 a.m. to allow crews to perform pothole repairs. The maintenance is part of ongoing work on the Hampton Roads Express Lanes (HREL) Newport News segment project.
To help guide drivers during the closure, a signed detour will be posted. The alternate route will direct motorists to use North Armistead Avenue and Settlers Landing Road to access another on-ramp to I-64 east.
VDOT has confirmed that access to businesses and homes along LaSalle Avenue will not be affected during the temporary closure. Additionally, all turning movements at nearby intersections will remain open, allowing for continued local travel without major interruption.
This maintenance work is weather-dependent and may be rescheduled if conditions are not favorable. As always, VDOT advises all drivers to stay alert in and around work zones.
“Motorists are reminded to use caution when traveling near work zones, obey posted speed limits, follow lane markings and barrier guides, be alert to digital message signs and drive distraction-free.”
The I-64 on-ramp repairs are part of broader efforts under the HREL project to improve traffic flow and enhance long-term roadway quality in the Hampton Roads region. The express lanes initiative spans multiple phases and involves upgrades to lane capacity, traffic management technology, and infrastructure resilience.
VDOT encourages all travelers to check local traffic updates and plan extra travel time as needed. While the ramp closure is brief, it supports the overall goal of creating a safer and more efficient roadway system for residents and commuters alike.
