Virginia man wins $2 million Mega Millions prize with lucky Megaplier purchase

Chesapeake, Virginia – A Virginia Lottery player walked away with a $2 million Mega Millions prize after spending just an extra dollar. The anonymous winner hit it big during the September 26 drawing and shared his disbelief, telling officials, “I about passed out!”

Virginia law protects the privacy of any winner of $1 million or more, meaning the identity of this lucky player remains confidential. Still, the Virginia Lottery confirmed that the winning ticket was purchased at the Wawa located at 471 Kempsville Road in Chesapeake.

One Dollar Turned a Million into Two

The winning numbers for the September 26 drawing were 4-21-27-33-49, with the Mega Ball number being 21. The player selected the Easy Pick option, letting the computer randomly generate his numbers. His ticket matched the first five numbers but missed the Mega Ball, which would typically result in a $1 million prize.

However, the extra dollar spent on the Megaplier add-on feature doubled the prize to a life-changing $2 million. “I about passed out!” the winner told lottery officials after realizing his good fortune.

The retailer didn’t walk away empty-handed either. Because Wawa sold the winning ticket, they earned a $10,000 bonus from the Virginia Lottery.

A Rare Win Across the Nation

This ticket was the only one in the entire country to match the first five numbers for that particular drawing. Had it matched all six numbers, including the Mega Ball, the winner would have claimed a staggering $474 million jackpot.

Mega Millions drawings take place every Tuesday and Friday at 11 p.m. The odds of matching the first five numbers without the Mega Ball stand at 1 in 12,629,232, while the odds of winning the full jackpot are 1 in 290,472,336.

With those kinds of odds, this Virginia player’s win is nothing short of extraordinary—and proof that sometimes, a single dollar can make all the difference.
