VDOT to host public hearing on major I-81 widening project between Montgomery and Roanoke counties
Salem, Virginia – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is inviting local residents and travelers to share feedback on a proposed project that will significantly widen a major stretch of Interstate 81. The project aims to expand nine miles of I-81 from two to three lanes in both directions, stretching from exit 128 in Montgomery County to exit 137 in Roanoke County and Salem.
To inform the public and gather input, VDOT will hold a design public hearing on Thursday, November 6, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Glenvar Elementary School, located at 4507 Malus Drive in Salem. The meeting will follow an open-house format, allowing attendees to drop in at any time and speak directly with VDOT representatives who will be available to answer questions and discuss project details.
Project Overview and Key Improvements
This major infrastructure initiative includes:
-
Replacing seven pairs of bridges along the corridor
-
Installing concrete barrier walls in narrow median areas
-
Constructing sound walls at selected locations to reduce traffic noise
-
Upgrading ramps at exit 128 (Ironto), exit 132 (Dixie Caverns), and at the Ironto Rest Area
These improvements are designed to enhance traffic flow, improve safety, and reduce congestion for the thousands of drivers who rely on this key portion of I-81 daily.
Public Input and Accessibility
VDOT encourages public participation, and comments can be submitted during the hearing or until November 16, 2025. Feedback may be mailed to Craig Moore, Project Manager, 731 Harrison Avenue, Salem, VA 24153, or emailed to [email protected]. Make sure to reference “I-81 Exits 128 to 137 Widening Public Comment” in the subject line.
Anyone requiring special accommodations or assistance to attend the hearing is asked to contact Craig Moore at 540-387-5353, 800-367-7623, or use TTY/TDD 711.
Part of a Broader I-81 Corridor Initiative
This proposed widening is part of the I-81 Corridor Improvement Program, a comprehensive $3 billion effort signed into law in spring 2019. The broader program includes 65 capital projects and numerous operational upgrades spanning the 325-mile length of I-81 within Virginia.
Residents can learn more about this and other improvement projects at Improve81.org.
By attending the hearing or submitting comments, community members can play an active role in shaping one of Virginia’s most traveled interstate corridors.
