Mother hospitalized in critical condition after her 20-year-old son she was trying to calm down as he was screaming late in the night shot her repeatedly; son charged

New Mexico – In a shocking and deeply disturbing case in New Mexico, a 20-year-old man, identified as K. Marin, has been arrested after shooting his mother at least eleven times during the early hours of the morning, leaving her clinging to life in critical condition. Authorities say the woman was only trying to calm her son down as he screamed uncontrollably in the house when he opened fire.

Marin has been formally charged with aggravated battery against a household member with a deadly weapon and attempt to commit a felony of second-degree murder. He remains in custody without bond. Court records also indicate Marin has a pending indictment for multiple prior offenses, including attempt to commit capital murder, aggravated assault, and drug charges from a 2023 case.

The events that led to the shooting began late Sunday night. Marin’s brother reported hearing him yelling and screaming around 11 p.m. Concerned, he approached Marin—who was in the kitchen—and told him to go to sleep. Their mother also got involved, telling her son the same and adding that “he was acting crazy,” according to court documents.

Trying to deescalate the tension, she reportedly brought Marin into his bedroom and stayed with him. But sometime around 3 a.m., gunfire rang out from that room. Marin’s brother woke to the sound and rushed to investigate. What he saw was horrifying: their mother bleeding in the hallway outside Marin’s bedroom. She had been shot multiple times. Without waiting for emergency responders, Marin’s brother placed his mother in a vehicle and drove her straight to the hospital. While en route, he called another family member to tell them what had happened.

When police were alerted by hospital staff about a gunshot victim, officers from the police department responded to the family’s residence and discovered a chaotic scene. A protective sweep of the house revealed blood stains, bullet casings, and shell impacts on the home’s exterior. Three semi-automatic rifle/carbine casings were found in Marin’s bedroom, along with a bloody shoe print and blood droplets under a vehicle parked in the driveway. A woman staying in the home at the time said she awoke to the sound of the victim yelling for Marin’s brother. When she stepped out, she saw the mother “bleeding heavily,” clutching her waist in the hallway. After the victim was rushed to the hospital, the woman re-entered the house and saw Marin sitting calmly on the living room couch.

This isn’t the first time Marin has been in trouble with the law. In a separate case from January 2023, he was indicted on multiple counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, including one charge for causing brain injury or paralysis, and one count of attempting to commit capital murder of multiple individuals. As of now, Marin’s mother remains in critical condition, with doctors confirming eleven gunshot wounds across her body. He is awaiting further court proceedings as the case continues to develop. The motive remains under investigation, but for now, the community is left reeling from the reality that a mother, simply trying to soothe her son, nearly lost her life at his hands.
