Roanoke County hosts free Cybersecurity Escape Room and shredding event this Friday
Roanoke, Virginia – In recognition of Cybersecurity Awareness Month, Roanoke County’s Information Technology Department is inviting residents to take part in two engaging and educational events this Friday, October 17, at the Brambleton Center. Running from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., both events are completely free and aim to teach residents the importance of cybersecurity in fun and practical ways.
The highlight of the day is the Cybersecurity Escape Room, a creative experience designed to combine entertainment with education. Participants will be challenged to “help stop Dracula from hacking into the blood bank,” working through a series of puzzles and clues rooted in cybersecurity concepts. This imaginative setup provides a fun way for individuals of all ages to learn about protecting personal information and preventing digital threats.
Alongside the escape room is the Secure Document Shredding Event, an essential service for those looking to safely dispose of sensitive paperwork. Residents are encouraged to bring their old bank statements, medical records, or other personal documents to ensure secure destruction. “Take advantage of this free service of safe disposal,” organizers urged.
These activities not only raise awareness about online safety but also offer the community a hands-on opportunity to take action in their personal and digital lives. Roanoke County hopes that these events will empower people to be more vigilant about cybersecurity throughout the year—not just in October.
Both events will be held at the Brambleton Center, and no registration is required. Community members are encouraged to stop by, participate, and learn how they can better protect themselves and their information in the digital world.
