City of Roanoke invites residents to submit nominations for the 2025 Citizen of the Year award

Roanoke, Virginia – The City of Roanoke is officially accepting nominations for the 2025 Citizen of the Year, a prestigious honor recognizing individuals who have made a lasting impact through exceptional volunteer service and community dedication. The award aims to spotlight those who go above and beyond to make Roanoke a better place to live.

Residents are encouraged to nominate individuals who have shown “above average volunteer or philanthropic dedication to the Community” and who have consistently served for at least three years. Nominees must also demonstrate efforts that extend well beyond the normal expectations of any paid employment they may hold. Additionally, eligible individuals must agree to have their achievements publicized, participate in related events, and consent to a background check.

Nomination Guidelines and How to Apply

To nominate someone for the 2025 Citizen of the Year, visit www.roanokeva.gov/citizenoftheyear to view the full criteria and fill out the nomination form. Physical forms are also available at the City Clerk’s Office, located in Room 456 of the Noel C. Taylor Municipal Building, 215 Church Avenue, S.W. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

The deadline to submit nominations is 5:00 PM on Friday, November 21, 2025. All nominees must be current residents of the City of Roanoke. However, previous winners and current elected officials are not eligible, and nominees must withdraw if they decide to run for public office during the nomination year.

To strengthen the application, individuals are encouraged to submit résumés, letters of endorsement, or other supporting materials that showcase the nominee’s commitment to the community.
