Single mother of 1 died after a heavily intoxicated 22-year-old man, who had previous DUI charges reduced to reckless driving, struck her while riding her e-bike; man arrested
Florida – In a shocking incident in Florida, a 38-year-old single mother, identified as K. Strang, lost her life after being struck by a speeding vehicle operated by a 22-year-old man, identified as X. Rigby, whose long history of reckless driving had repeatedly gone unchecked. Rigby now faces a string of serious felony charges after authorities say he was heavily intoxicated when he killed Strang, a mother of one, and left the scene without seeking help.
Rigby has been formally charged with DUI manslaughter, vehicular homicide, and leaving the scene of a crash involving death. These charges stem not only from the horrific events on the night of September 20 but also from a disturbing pattern of behavior behind the wheel. Court records reveal that Rigby had previously been arrested for DUI in 2023, after admitting to mixing alcohol and marijuana before driving. That charge, however, was later reduced to reckless driving in 2024. Even more troubling, he had already been involved in a hit-and-run incident back in 2022.
During his initial court appearance, Judge E. Zuroweste made her position clear. Citing his prior convictions, she said: “Here you are with a prior leaving the scene from 2022, then in 2024, the state was generous enough to reduce your DUI to a reckless, for purposes of bond, it’s a DUI. So, then, here we are now.” She went on to condemn the circumstances of the current case, stating: “We’ve now gone to a second DUI, but this time the extremely aggravating facts where you’ve killed somebody, left the scene and dragged their body.” Rigby was denied bond on two of the charges, and the judge set a $750,000 bond for the DUI manslaughter charge alone. Her final words in the hearing underscored the gravity of the situation: “I’m finding that you’re a danger to the community and that nothing else can secure your decision making and putting your life and everyone else’s life on the road.”
The crash occurred around 10:08 p.m. on Saturday. Investigators say Strang had been riding her e-bike southbound in the curb lane when Rigby, speeding with his vehicle, slammed into her from behind. The impact was violent—Strang was thrown onto the hood and windshield of the vehicle. But Rigby didn’t stop. Instead, he continued driving for approximately eight blocks with her body still lodged on the car. Eventually, her body fell from the vehicle. Rigby neither called for help nor stayed at the scene. Instead, he disappeared into the night.
By the time first responders arrived, Strang had already died from her injuries. Deputies from the Major Accident Investigation Team quickly began piecing together what happened, and their efforts soon led them to Rigby. Just a mile from the crash site, police found him at a local liquor store. He showed clear signs of intoxication—his speech was slurred, his gait unsteady, and the smell of alcohol was strong. Rigby refused to cooperate with field sobriety tests and was arrested on the spot.
Strang was described by those who knew her as deeply loving and selfless. A GoFundMe created in her memory called her an “angel” and praised her as one of the most caring souls in the community. Social media posts reveal the depth of her devotion to her child. In one especially poignant message, she wrote: “I’ll love you forever. I’ll like you for always. As long as I’m living my baby you’ll be loved.”
Strang’s sudden death has left not only a child without a mother but also an entire neighborhood shaken. The question that remains on so many lips: why was this allowed to happen again? Authorities have stated the investigation is still ongoing. But the facts already speak to a painful truth—one woman’s life was cut short by a man who, time and again, was given another chance behind the wheel. This time, his recklessness ended in irreversible tragedy.
