76-year-old woman, who shot her 38-year-old son in the stomach as soon as he returned from a calm-down walk following an argument they had about him getting to loud while playing games, was arrested

Arizona – In a shocking case of domestic violence in Arizona, a 76-year-old woman, identified as H. Benson, was arrested after allegedly shooting her 38-year-old son during a dispute over video game noise. Authorities say the son had gone for a walk to cool off after the disagreement but was shot in the stomach upon returning home. The incident has left the community stunned and has resulted in multiple charges against the elderly woman.

According to the police department, the incident occurred around 8:50 p.m. on Saturday at the woman’s residence. Officers were dispatched to the home following reports of a shooting and arrived to find a 38-year-old man outside the home suffering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen. The shooter was identified the 76-year-old mother, who was promptly taken into custody. She now faces charges of aggravated assault, disorderly conduct, and unlawful discharge of a firearm within city limits. Court documents reveal that earlier in the evening, police had already been called to the home around 7:45 p.m. during an earlier dispute. At that time, Benson had reportedly expressed frustration over her son being too loud while playing video games. Officers who responded explained to Benson that her son had “legal standing” to be at the residence. Shortly thereafter, the son left the home to go for a walk and calm down.

Benson told officers that when her son returned, she attempted to prevent him from coming back into the house. According to her account, he “lunged” toward her with “his hands in fists at his waistline.” Feeling threatened, Benson claimed she raised a firearm and pulled the trigger, not knowing whether the bullet had struck him. She later told investigators that she threw the weapon into a nearby canal after the incident. The son, whose name has not been released, was able to get outside and was later found by officers with a gunshot wound to his stomach. He was transported to a local hospital where his injuries were determined to be non-life-threatening. Authorities say he is expected to recover fully.

Police confirmed that after the shooting, Benson called 911 and reported that her son was “pounding” on the back door following the gunfire. Investigators later recovered the weapon and confirmed that Benson admitted to discarding it after the shooting. Neighbors in the usually quiet neighborhood were left stunned by the violence. A neighbor told local media that there had never been any previous incidents involving Benson and that the news came as a complete surprise.

Benson now faces serious legal consequences. The aggravated assault charge alone is a felony that could carry significant prison time if she is convicted. The additional charges of disorderly conduct and unlawful firearm discharge only compound the gravity of the situation.

So far, no court date has been released for Benson’s arraignment, but authorities confirmed she remains in custody. The investigation remains ongoing as officials work to determine the exact circumstances that led to the shooting. While the victim is expected to survive, the case highlights the tragic consequences that can arise from domestic conflicts—especially when a firearm is involved. As one officer noted, what began as a minor dispute over video game noise escalated into an act of irreversible violence that could change both lives forever.
