Trash collection resumes in Roanoke after snowstorm with temporary schedule changes

Roanoke, Virginia – Following a temporary suspension of services due to heavy snow and freezing temperatures, the City of Roanoke’s Solid Waste Management Division resumed its collection operations on Monday, February 2, 2026. The Southwest Quadrant, which was originally scheduled for collection last Saturday, faced delays due to dangerous road conditions. As a result, a revised pickup schedule has been implemented for the week to help sanitation crews catch up.

The adjusted schedule is as follows:

  • Monday – Southwest Quadrant (Limited Alley Service)

  • Tuesday – Northwest Quadrant (Limited Alley Service)

  • Wednesday – Northeast Quadrant (Limited Alley Service)

  • Thursday – Southeast Quadrant (Limited Alley Service)

  • Friday and Saturday – To be determined based on progress and conditions

City officials have urged residents to “leave their trash carts at the set out location until serviced”, noting that crews may work ahead of schedule depending on the daily workload. Once collection has occurred, residents are asked to return their carts away from the curb to their regular storage area.

Due to the winter backlog, curbside recycling, bulky item pickup, and brush collection remain temporarily suspended. However, the City has offered some flexibility: “Residents may neatly set out up to six secured bags of excess household trash next to their trash carts for collection.”

For households with alley trash collection, special accommodations have been made. If alleyways remain icy or blocked, “safely pull your trash cart or bags of excess trash to the front of your residence and we will service it.”

The Solid Waste Division emphasized that these adjustments are necessary to restore full operations while ensuring safety for both residents and collection crews. For further assistance or updates, citizens are encouraged to call 540-853-2000 and select Option 1.
