Radford University expands educational opportunities with Tartan Transfer Program for eight Virginia community colleges
Radford, Virginia – Renowned Virginia university Radford University has introduced a new project meant to improve the educational pathways available to community college students from across the state. The recently announced Tartan Transfer Program is designed to give students from eight distinct Virginia Community College System (VCCS) institutions a simplified transfer and continuing education path toward a bachelor’s degree.
The Tartan Transfer program is emerging as a strategic alliance between Radford University and several community colleges including Mountain Empire Community College, Mountain Gateway Community College, New River Community College, Patrick & Henry Community College, Southwest Virginia Community College, Virginia Highland Community College, Virginia Western Community College, and Wytheville Community College. With so many community colleges involved, this cooperation is meant to provide a seamless transfer experience—first of its type in Virginia.
Radford University President Bret Danilowicz emphasized the importance of this initiative.
“Tartan Transfer is another demonstration that Radford University and Virginia’s Community Colleges are committed to creating accessible and affordable degree pathways for Virginians, and to building bridges across the commonwealth,” Danilowicz said in a news release.
He additionally highlighted how the initiative helps to improve degree achievement and increase local economic prosperity throughout western Virginia.
Key features of the Tartan Transfer program include:
- Affordability: Through partnerships with VCCS, the program allows students to pursue tuition-free associate degrees and take advantage of the Radford Tuition Promise for further financial ease.
- Maximized Transfer Credits: The program promises a close alignment between Radford University and the community colleges to ensure that the maximum number of credits are transferred.
- Personalized Advising: Students declaring their intent to transfer will be assigned a dedicated advisor from Radford to assist them throughout their educational journey.
- Early Campus Integration: Prospective transfer students will gain early access to special events and activities at Radford, helping them integrate into the university community ahead of their official transfer.
- Career Preparation: The program also offers specialized internships and co-curricular experiences aimed at preparing students for successful careers.

Peter Anderson, vice president for Instruction and Student Services at New River Community College, remarked on the significance of the partnership.
“By partnering with Radford University, we are opening doors to a wealth of resources, expertise and programs that will enrich our educational offerings and support our students in achieving their highest potential. We look forward to a fruitful collaboration that will benefit not only our students but also the broader academic community. Together, we are fostering a brighter future for all,” Anderson said.
“This landmark agreement with Radford University represents a powerful commitment to student success and educational access in Virginia,” said VCCS Chancellor David Doré. “By creating a clear, unobstructed pathway for transfer, we’re removing barriers and infusing our students with the confidence they need to achieve their academic goals.”
The Tartan Transfer initiative fits Radford University’s goal of increasing educational opportunities and success throughout Virginia. It not only closes the difference between two-year and four-year educational programs but also guarantees that higher education is more inclusive, affordable, and career success oriented.
