VDOT introduces traffic pattern change to enhance safety at Route 50 and Victory Road

Staunton, Virginia – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced the permanent closure of the crossover between eastbound and westbound Route 50/17 (Millwood Pike) at its intersection with Route 728 (Victory Road) in Frederick County. The closure, set for Monday, October 21, is intended to improve safety by allowing only right turns between Route 50/17 and Victory Road.

New Traffic Patterns for Motorists

As part of the new traffic pattern, westbound Route 50/17 drivers needing access to Victory Road will no longer be able to make a direct left turn. Instead, they will turn left at the signalized intersection with Route 1092 (Independence Drive) and continue south for about half a mile to reach Victory Road.

Similarly, drivers on Victory Road needing to access westbound Route 50/17 will turn onto Independence Drive, travel about half a mile, and use the signalized intersection to safely turn left onto Route 50/17.

Responding to Safety Concerns

VDOT decided to close the crossover following a series of crashes and injuries at the intersection, many of which were caused by drivers attempting left turns through the crossover. By eliminating left turns, VDOT hopes to reduce the risk of accidents and improve safety for all motorists traveling through the area.

On or around October 21, traffic delineator posts will be installed to block the left-turn lanes and the crossover. Motorists will be alerted to the new traffic pattern through signs and digital message boards. As always, all work is weather-dependent.
