Traffic shift expected on Route 29 as part of Fairfax County Parkway widening project
Fairfax, Virginia – Motorists should prepare for upcoming single-lane closures on Route 29 northbound and southbound at the Fairfax County Parkway (Route 286) interchange on Wednesday, Oct. 9. According to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), the lane closures will take place between 9:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. to implement a new traffic shift as part of the ongoing Fairfax County Parkway widening north project.
After the traffic shift is in place by 3 p.m., Route 29 will be reduced from three lanes in each direction to two lanes for approximately four months. This reduction is necessary to allow for the construction of a pier for the widened sections of the northbound and southbound Fairfax County Parkway bridges over Route 29.

- Adding noise walls in the area near the Route 29 interchange
- Constructing an acceleration lane for traffic turning from Nomes Court onto northbound Fairfax County Parkway
