Virginia Department of Transportation to implement major safety enhancements at York County intersection
York County, Virginia – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), in partnership with York County, is set to improve safety measures at the intersection of Goosley Road and Old Williamsburg Road. Based on a roadway safety analysis conducted alongside York County, VDOT will change the traffic pattern to a new all-way stop configuration beginning as early as October 9, weather permitting.
This upgrade aims to enhance the safety of motorists by requiring all vehicles to stop at each approach before entering the intersection. The changes are expected to significantly reduce fatal and serious injury crashes while only slightly increasing travel time.
Safety Enhancements to Goosley and Old Williamsburg Roads
The planned modifications on Goosley Road include the installation of warning signage and yellow reflective strips for northbound traffic approaching the intersection. In addition, a new stop sign and delineator posts will be placed along the centerline markings to control traffic and prevent wrong-way entry into the southbound slip lane. Southbound on Emily Road, a new stop sign will also be installed.
For Old Williamsburg Road, enhancements will involve the addition of extra warning signs, pavement markings, and yellow reflective strips for both directions. New stop signs will be placed, and dual yield signs with red reflective strips will be positioned on the slip lane that leads southbound onto Goosley Road.
Traffic Management During Installation
To complete the installation of these safety features, VDOT crews will be working from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on October 9 and 10. During this time, traffic will be managed by onsite flaggers on both Goosley Road and Old Williamsburg Road near the intersection. Drivers are urged to be cautious while traveling through the area, as work schedules are subject to weather and may change.
The goal of this traffic reconfiguration is to make the intersection safer for drivers and reduce the likelihood of serious accidents. Motorists are advised to be prepared for the new traffic pattern and to drive attentively in this enhanced safety zone.
