VDOT to enhance pedestrian safety at McAfee Knob with new bridge

Roanoke County, Virginia – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has received the necessary approvals to proceed with hiring contractors for the construction of a pedestrian bridge at the McAfee Knob trailhead, a significant stride towards the commencement of this project.

This proposed overpass, spanning Route 311 in Roanoke County, is designed to enhance safety for those visiting the McAfee Knob trailhead. According to VDOT Spokesperson Jason Bond, the bridge will “definitely improve safety for pedestrians and people accessing the trail,” due to the significant amount of foot traffic in the area.

In facilitating the project, the Commonwealth Transportation Board has passed a resolution authorizing VDOT to form an agreement with the National Park Service to undertake the bridge’s construction.

VDOT is slated to invite bids for the construction project later this summer. The objective is to achieve completion of the bridge by the conclusion of the following year. Upon completion, responsibility for the bridge’s upkeep will be transferred to the National Park Service.
