Multiple speakers took place during the SML Regional Chamber of Commerce’s at the Bedford Area Welcome Center. Culture remains the main focus
The SML Regional Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Academy class in February was all about the history and culture of the Smith Mountain Lake area.
The meeting was held at the Bedford Area Welcome Center on February 1 and had several speakers.
Andy Bruns, the executive director of the Chamber, said, “It was a great afternoon to hear local leaders talk to the class about how important it is to develop basic leadership skills.”
Amanda Cox, who works for AEP and is in charge of external affairs, talked about the history of the Smith Mountain Project, which was started in the 1960s to make hydroelectricity for the area.
Sheridan Brown, who is on the Board of Directors for the Friends of Booker T. Washington National Monument, gave an overview of cultural opportunities at Smith Mountain Lake.
Lastly, Chasity Barbour, who is the Director of Community Programs for the Town of Vinton and a graduate of the 2022 Leadership Academy, talked about what she learned about building community connections last year.
The SMLRCC Leadership Academy is a 12-month program that aims to train a diverse group of people who are knowledgeable, committed, and qualified to lead Bedford, Franklin, and Pittsylvania county groups.
